One credit usually equals about 120–180 hours of work in a subject, or one full school year. A semester-long course is half a credit. For a textbook-based course, finishing the book is generally counted as one credit.
Most states and colleges look for about 24 credits across four years: 4 English, 3–4 math, 3–4 science, 3–4 social studies, 2 of a foreign language, plus fine arts, physical education and electives.
Grades and GPA. Letter grades are converted on a 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0), weighted by credits. This page does that math for you as you type.
